Pre-Academic Courses

Because we recognize that students have different needs, our classes have been designed to prepare our students to do well in school and at work. Since not everyone is able to go to school during the day, we also offer classes at night to serve as many students as possible.

The classes students will take depends on their ability to communicate in English as determined by the ESL assessment test or the LBCC assessment test. Many students begin their study of English in either the Introduction to College English courses (ESL 840 to 845) or Everyday English courses (ESL 640 - 645). These courses give students the skills they will need to take our more advanced courses. Students who are interested in learning English in order to get a degree or transfer to a university go into the academic track program. This program can only be taken with a sufficient English assessment score or after completion of ESL 845 or ESL 645.

The academic track courses include ESL 146, 147 (grammar courses), 54, 56, 33 and 34 (writing courses), and 63 and 65 (reading courses). Students should consult the course catalog for further details.
