What are ESL Classes? ESL classes will help non-native speakers of English with writing, reading, speaking and listening skills. The courses are designed to develop specific skills needed to use English effectively in college and on the job. ESL Assessment for New Students The first step in assessing English skills is to select one of the following options:
Enroll in a first level ESL Class If you know little or no English, you will be assigned to a first level ESL class (ESL 840 or ESL 640). If you are a California resident, you should take ESL 840. If you are not a California resident, you should take ESL 640. Non-residents pay a higher enrollment fee for ESL 840. ESL Assessment for Continuing Students As a continuing student, your teacher will assign you to the next course. You will receive a routing card from your teacher at the end of your class. This card tells you what ESL class to take next. Keep it in a safe place. You have to show it to your new teacher(s) on the first day of class. ESL Assessment for Returning Students As a returning student, your last instructor will assign you to an ESL class if you attended LBCC less than two (2) years ago. If you have been absent from LBCC for more than two (2) years you need to follow the same placement process as a new student. The ESL Office will assist you in the process of returning to LBCC. ESL Orientation The ESL staff will help you understand your assessment results and introduce you to the academic programs and support services offered at Long Beach City College. The ESL Orientation Program offers bilingual orientation sessions in the following languages: English Call the ESL Office at (562) 938-3037 or (562) 938-3970 for the Orientation schedule.
