Introduction

This is a lesson about using contractions with the simple present conjugation of the verb, to be, in negative statements.  The main purpose of this lesson is to provide many interactive quizzes so that students may practice using contractions.

Contractions Using To Not Be

Contractions are made in two ways.

  • First, by taking the pronoun (I, he, she, it, you, they, we) and the to be verb and combining them by dropping the first letter of the be verb and using an apostrophe to replace it.  The word not is left behind.
  • Second, the pronoun (I, he, she, it, you, they, we) is not changed.  Next, the to be verb is connected to the word not by not changing the to be verb and adding n't.
  • ****** There isn't a contraction of am + not.  The word amn't does not exist.  The only way to make a contraction from a sentence like, "I am not happy.", is to write, "I'm not happy." ******
