Course Prerequisites: ESL 56 or placement by the college writing assessment process.
Objectives: ESL 33X is designed to improve academic writing at the essay level. ESL 33X emphasizes expository essay writing, summary writing, reading comprehension, and critical analysis. ESL 33X introduces illustration, process, compare and contrast, and definition as rhetorical modes used in writing expository essays. ESL 33X prepares students for ESL 34 or 34X.

Methods of presentation: The Internet, textbooks, handouts, and transparencies will be used to present a selection of rhetorical modes and writing strategies. Model readings are provided which present grammar and vocabulary in context. Readings are discussed and used as writing topics for essays and summaries. Extensive use of computers will be made by both the students and the instructor.

Method of evaluation: Compositions: 40%, Rewrites: 10%, Quizzes & other activities 30% Final Exam: 20% GRADING: A = 90-100, B = 80-89, C = 70-79, D = 60-69, F = 0-59 Completion of homework, regular attendance, and class participation are required for success in this course due to its many graded assignments.

Required Textbooks and Materials
:
(CWS) College Writing Skills W/Readings (Langan); (DF) Discovering Fiction (Kay/Gelshenen); The Newbury House Dictionary of American English; A Pocket Style Manual (Hacker); a loose-leaf binder with standard 8 and half by 11 inch lined paper, pens, pencils, and correction fluid.

Class rules:
1. No late paragraphs or summaries will be accepted. No make up quizzes will be given. If you miss a paper, you will be given a zero for that assignment.
2. All compositions must be word processed in the writing lab. These should be double spaced with one inch margins.
3. No phone calls in class. Turn off your beepers and cellular phones before entering the class.
4. The instructor reserves the right to make changes to the syllabus or allow exceptions to the rules as he deems just or necessary.
