Our Classrooms Long Beach City College and the English as a Second Language department are dedicated to using technology to enhance learning in our classes. We believe that it is important to utilize various multimedia formats to reinforce traditional classroom material. This commitment to technology extends from using audio and video cassettes in our regular classrooms to computer and Internet applications in our multimedia classrooms. The ESL department has three classrooms in which technology is most obvious: the Multimedia Classroom, the Learning Center, and the Writing Center . The Multimedia Classroom, or MMC, is a modern state-of-the-art facility. It has 36 Gateway E4300 Pentium 4 computers running Windows XP Professional for student use. Each computer is Internet-ready. Along with many computer programs, the MMC also has DVD/CD players, projection equipment, a laserdisc player as well as traditional audiocassette and videocassette players. The ESL Learning Center is a laboratory dedicated to self-paced study. This center has 29 Dell Optiplex GX520 computers, each fully loaded with language software. Other software and cassette players are also available for student use. With the assistance of tutors, students can work on specific learning needs. The Learning Center is an ideal place for ESL students to receive individual attention, study for classes, and to work at their own pace. The ESL Writing Center offers a well equipped multimedia classroom, with 30 Gateway Pentium 4 computers, specialized software, projectors, videocassette player and more. All tailored to ESL writing students needs.
